Training vs Working Out – The Difference

The differences between training and working out is what will separate you from getting so-so results to getting maximum results.

By now,  I’m sure you’ve all heard someone you know say “Yeah, I just went to the gym to workout this morning” , but you will almost never hear someone say “Yeah, I went to the gym to train this morning.”

For most people, the only time you will hear someone use the word “train” is if they are some type of super professional athlete. However, we shouldn’t limit the use of the word “train” to simply the  elite athlete.

What is Working Out?

In my opinion, working out is what 95% of the gym population does every day. To me, working out is when you have no defined plan and goal. People who “work out” are the skinny teenagers who never gain an ounce of muscle. They are the overweight  middle-aged women who reads Women’s Health magazine on the treadmill.

What is Training?

On the other hand, we have people who go to the gym to train and get out. Training is when you have a set defined plan of exactly what you are going to do in the gym that day. People who train have an end goal. That goal could be to get to 10% body fat or to gain 20 pounds of muscle.

Whatever your goal is, if you are a person that trains, you know when you step foot in the gym that you are going to warm-up for X amount of time, do X amount of exercises, for X amount of reps, and rest X amount of time in between. If you don’t do that, then you ain’t training.
